jyn erso was born in a separatist prison on vallt to galen and lyra erso roughly around 25 or 24 bby. due to galen's refusal to use his research on kyber crystals to help the confederacy, the couple was imprisoned, with jyn's birth soon after. they spent six months there until, under the instructions of orson krennic, the family moved to an apartment on coruscant, where galen looked for work; at the end of the clone wars, they eventually relocated to lokori, as galen could work for the empire there. however, once galen realized his research for krennic was being used for nefarious purposes, with the help of saw gererra, the family was forced to go into hiding on lah'mu. at this point, jyn was four years old.for the next four years, the erso family lived a relatively quiet life on a homestead on lah'mu. however, krennic finally caught up to them. galen, instructing his wife and jyn to hide, went to meet krennic. however, unable to watch her husband bow to the empire so passively, lyra tried to save him, shooting krennic by the shoulder only to be killed. nearby in the grasses, jyn watched both her mother die and her father get taken by the empire, before running to a nearby bunker. she spent hours in the dark before being rescued and taken off-planet by saw.........THE PARTISANS.....›....roughly 17-9 BBY.
on the shuttle, saw presented eight-year-old jyn with a choice: she could attend a boarding school on naboo that he would fully pay for and attain the education her parents wanted for her, or she could come back with to onderon with him and join the partisans. still struggling with her mother's death and her father's kidnapping, it was an easy decision.even as a child, jyn was instrumental to the success of the partisans. while saw tried to shield her from the worst of the organization early on, he quickly realized how smart and useful she was. as a small girl, she was unassuming and innocent –– in many of her first missions with the partisans, she acted as bait or as a distraction. children can also fit into places grown sentients cannot, so she slowly began participating in subterfuge and surveillance operations. from there, the transition into a fully-fledged soldier was a natural one, even though she was only just a teenager.learning how to fight didn't come easily to her and saw trained her harder and more viciously than any other new recruit. one of the first lessons she learned was how to get up time and time again after being knocked down. saw taught her first how to fight with her fists, then with truncheons, then with a blaster; most importantly, he taught her how to fight dirty and survive. through years of grueling training, she quickly became one of the best soldiers in the partisans and saw's main enforcer. she completed guerilla operations brutally and effectively. on occasion, she also tortured spies and captured imperial soldiers. a few times, she endured torture at the hands of the empire as well, leaving her with numerous physical and mental scars.........ON HER OWN.....›....roughly 9-0 BBY.
however, despite her high-ranking position in the partisans, during a mission on tamsye prime, when she was sixteen, saw left her behind in a bunker with her blaster, saying he’d return for her at dawn, but never returned. she waited for him for days, only to come to the heart-breaking realization that saw had abandoned her. unbeknownst to her, saw had done it for her safety. while jyn never used her last name (simply going by jyn, or, to some, being known as 'jyn gerrera'), people were growing suspicious of her background and possible connections to the empire. in an attempt to protect her, saw left her behind and burned all connections she had with the partisans. for the first time in her life, she was truly on her own.jyn spent the next several years alone, never stopping too long in one place or making permanent attachments. she became a criminal, just trying to survive. she had no love for the empire and saw’s rebellion had abandoned her, so she focused on keeping her head down and making it to the next day. however, she did not target civilians or innocents; the targets of her crimes were imperial personnel and other criminals.after being caught and arrested in 0 bby for various charges against the empire, jyn was sentenced to twenty years in an imperial labor camp on wobani. luckily, she was arrested under the alias of 'liana hallik' and categorized as a petty criminal. however, wobani changed her, hardening her in a way she hadn’t been before. most prisoners didn't survive five years and jyn's sentence was twenty –– she had little hope of getting out alive, especially since she had no real connections or attachments on the outside.in her file, imperial admiral bethava rocwyn wrote on jyn's arrest: "another petty criminal. another stupid girl. another piece of flotsam unable to find a place within the empire other than as an obstacle to its glorious machinery. she at least has some spirit and a strong spine, so put her to work at one of the emperor's labor camps, where we can wring some usage of her before she dries up and dies."........ROGUE ONE.....›....0 BBY.
approximately six months later, rebels break her out of wobani. believing her rescuers to be members of the partisans, she's surprised to learn that it is the rebel alliance that has come for her now. alongside cassian andor, bodhi rook, chirrut imwe, baze malbus, and k-2so, she found the truth out about her father and the death star, and managed to steal the plans off of the Imperial base of scarif. however, the death star fired on the base, and she was “killed” in the blast.........THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY.....›....roughly 0-4 ABY.
hours after luke skywalker destroyed the death star, an imperial ship entered orbit on yavin iv. somehow, jyn was able to survive the blast and maneuver her way off-planet. after spending weeks in the medical bay recovering from her injuries (mostly burns), she decided not to take mon mothma's proposal of a new identity and a ship, and instead joined the rebellion, mostly out of lack of anything better to do while she recuperated from scarif.jyn's main verse is set during the original trilogy. though she could easily climb the ranks of alliance personnel, she remains in a sort of limbo. believing in the partisans' extremist methods rather than the more "peaceful" ideology that the alliance promoted, she struggles to find her place within the organization. there is a part of her that wants to escape off-planet and live out the rest of her life in anonymity but she also searches for purpose, for a place to channel her anger and actually make some difference in the galaxy.
